William O. Darby 1911-1945

William O. Darby became early in World War II, one of the Army's greatest legendary heroes by activating the U.S. Army Rangers in Northern Ireland, training them in British Commando tradition in Scotland, and then leading his Rangers through four landings in the Mediterranean War -North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio. He also led legendary campaigns in the mountains of Tunisia and Italy. Enlisted men and generals alike applauded Bill Darby's leadership, his insights into men's hearts, and his desire to have his men trained to the highest efficiency. He lived his teaching that no officer ever ask a soldier to do in combat what he himself was not willing to do. Bill Darby, posthumously appointed to Brigadier General, was killed in Europe while serving as Assistant Division Commander of the acclaimed 10th Mountain Division in Italy. Tragically, Bill Darby was killed during battle to clear Germans from Italy two days before VE-Day as he lived, "in action upfront." General William O. Darby is buried in his beloved hometown, Fort Smith, Arkansas in the Fort Smith National Cemetery. General C. Lucien K. Trusccott, commanding general of the 5th Army, wrote of Bill Darby: "Never in this war have I known a more gallant, heroic officer." Bill Darby's heritage and legacy continue today in the 75th Ranger Regiment, headquartered in Fort Benning, GA. The elite 75th Ranger Regiment is a flexible, highly trained and rapidly deployable light infantry force with specialized skills that enable it to be employed against a variety of targets. The concepts and training of Bill Darby are utilized today in quick response reaction teams and deliberate operations as required by the current worldwide military and political environment.
